Residents at Golfcrest Healthcare in Hollywood, Florida enjoy their occupational therapy rehab through functional activities of daily living combined with reminiscing and cognitive therapies.  Kenyetta Morales, MS, OTR/L believes in giving her patients functional activities to enhance their rehab potential.

“Activities, such as knitting and crocheting not only provide the fine motor component of therapy, but also incorporate cognitive skills as well’” explains Mrs. Morales.  Bridging the gap between generations, not only aids in recovery, but empowers the patients as well.  Patients realize that they too have much to offer during the treatment sessions. Recovery is “One stitch at a time”, states Lisa Panning, MSPT, RSM.

“The keys to relearning and retraining are finding something that interests the client”, stated Dr. Sheri Feldman Ed.D. CCC-SLP,  Speech Pathologist, at Golfcrest Healthcare in Hollywood.  Through questions and answers from staff on the therapy team as well as contact with the patient’s family members, it was determined that the soap opera ,”General Hospital” was an integral part of the patient’s life prior to her hospitalization.

Rehab Services Manager, Lisa Panning, MSPT stated,” If it’s General Hospital that she wants, it is General Hospital that she gets!”   With that, Ms. Panning turned her computer into a cognitive learning experience.

Ms. Panning negotiated the web until she found a site with a substantial amount of pictures of the client’s favorite character, Sonny.   Dr. Feldman directed the patient to answer questions based on the photographs that she saw.  In addition, more photographs were obtained for their communicative and conversational intent.  Then with a smile and twinkle in her eye, the patient immersed herself in long conversations with the staff regarding the ongoing saga of the soap opera.

Golfcrest Healthcare is have a cookout to honor our around the clock CNA’s for the care and compassion they provide for our residents. Our servant leader/Administrator, Sylvia Kruse has been preparing for the last three days. Our housekeeping director, John Styles, assists her on the grill.

Our facility now makes it possible for residents to Video Chat with family members in other cities or states using the SKYPE. For those not familiar, SKYPE is a Internet program that allows you have Live Video chat with anyone, anywhere.

Lisa Panning MSPT will be attending CEU training Wii Hab Beyond the Games in June.  Golfcrest utilizes the Wii for their patients in rehab.  This course is a great opportunity to practice and learn many different Wii programs for clinical application.  I can’t wait to bring this back to the department!
